Student leaders do the hard yards By Sophie Cornish SHIRLEY Intermediate School student leaders painted their pools for ‘serve the school day’ last week. The idea to paint the pools came from the leaders who wanted to give back to the school and also save money. The job ended up taking two

days with both the main pool and a smaller pool needing a paint job. Shirley Intermediate principal Geoff Siave is proud of his student’s efforts. “They’re finding the hardest part is keeping themselves a little bit clean,” he said. Student leader Ben Cox said the students may paint the

playground next. They were allowed to listen to music while painting and were provided lunch by the school.

By Sophie Cornish FIFTEEN RETAILERS in New Brighton Mall are now signed up to the blanket trespass programme. Blair Hughes, of Paper Plus, has identified two people he wants to trespass from his store and is currently in the process of completing the paper work to do so. Once a person has received a blanket trespass, it applies to all stores signed up to the programme. But publicity about the blanket trespass could be deterring shoplifters. Mr Hughes said shoplifting incidents had dropped off recently. “I haven’t had to tackle anyone recently . . . (shoplifting) certainly hasn’t risen too much lately,” he said. An issue with trespassing people is identification. Usually a shoplifter will run before any action can be taken. So a trespass notice can only be issued if they are identified or if they return. Documentation needs to be filled out to make the trespass formal and enforceable if it went to court. •Turn to page 6

FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK WORD MAY be getting around the bad eggs that you now face a united front if you want to steal from New Brighton retailers. I’m talking about our front page article today which reveals 15 retailers have now signed up to the blanket trespass programme. That means if you get caught stealing – or causing problems – at one shop, there’s a very high chance now you’ll be banned from others who are part of the scheme. Retailers are saying they have noticed a drop off in problems caused by trouble-makers and shoplifters since word started to get around about the scheme. The war is far from over but the opening rounds look like being won. Meanwhile, South New Brighton and Southshore residents are getting behind the local community board over coastal erosion (see page 3). - Barry Clarke

News Letters support estuary remediation Residents back Southshore flood protection campaign By Sophie Cornish SOUTH NEW Brighton and Southshore residents are signing their names on letters of support for improved short-term flood mitigation in the area. The letters back the CoastalBurwood Community Board’s resolution to city council last month about the remediation of the estuary edge from Bridge St to Southshore Spit. Once the letters have been collected, they will be submitted to the city council via the community board. The future of the area between the jetty and the boardwalk is up for debate and the community board recommends restoring it to pre-earthquake condition. The flood protection on the estuary edge was damaged during the earthquakes and several flooding events have occurred since, causing issues for nearby properties, businesses and clubs. A meeting for the decision was

planned for last Thursday but has now been pushed back to next Tuesday to allow more time for discussions. City council staff told the community board last month they were not planning to support the resolution, and wanted to see the area between the jetty and the boardwalk erode naturally. Several concerned residents, including Samantha Fay, decided

to create a letter residents can sign in support. So far 700 letters have been distributed and more than 200 have already been returned. Ms Fay was overwhelmed with the feedback, some people even offered to go door knocking in their streets with the letters. “It’s been really, really positive, people are saying, yes (the community board) have got it right so let’s get in there and

support,” said Ms Fay. Forms can be picked up from New Brighton Bin Inn and Bridge St Challenge. They can be returned to the South New Brighton School office or Bridge St Challenge by Friday. This comes as an updated report on whether coastal flooding and erosion information should be included on more than 20,000 property records is being finalised. City councillors and community board members are expected to be briefed on the Coastal Hazard Assessment for Christchurch and Banks Peninsula (2017) on October 17, before it goes to the city council on November 2. City council head of strategic policy Helen Beaumont said in Southshore and South New Brighton, the city council would work with Regenerate Christchurch to engage on The Southshore and South New Brighton Regeneration Strategy. “The regeneration strategy will focus on short, medium and long-term responses to adapt to both seismic risks and the effects of climate change and sea-level rise, alongside the social and economic needs of these communities.”

GODWIT SCULPTURE The South Brighton Residents Association is still requiring approximately $7000 to go forward with the proposed godwit sculpture. So far $23,794 has been raised. At least $26,000 will be needed, possibly up to $30,000 for additional costs. The SBRA missed out on funding from Fonterra, however have approached Creative New Zealand for additional funding, as well as gaming trusts. The sculpture will be created by local artist Bon Suter and will feature seven aluminium godwits affixed to the top of seven poles with varying heights. If people still wish to give toward the sculpture they can donate to the South Brighton Residents Association. FESTIVAL INCLUDES EAST Two walks will take place in the eastern suburbs as part of The Breeze Walking Festival. The ‘Meet in the Middle’ walk will take place on October 15 to celebrate the opening of the Te Ara Otakaro – the Avon Trail. The community is encouraged to join the trek on foot or bike from either the New Brighton clock tower or Cambridge Tce in the central city and meet in the middle at Kerrs Reach for a family fun day and regatta.

Your Local Views Gym complex needed Avril Enslow is the chief executive for the Christchurch School of Gymnastics and talks about the recent recommendation by the Coastal-Burwood Community Board to city council to grant a new lease for the school on an area adjacent to the new Eastern Recreation and Sports Centre. Its previous building was damaged during the Christchurch earthquakes The Christchurch School of Gymnastics is a not-for-profit organisation that has provided gymnastics and movement programmes in Christchurch for over 50 years. All income is directed towards programme delivery and development, staff development and facility, and equipment improvement and maintenance. CSG has had a facility at QE II since 1996 and continued delivering programmes, in spite of the disruption of the earthquakes, giving many children and families

a sense of normality. This included the successful preparation of Courtney McGregor for the 2016 Olympics. Why does the club need to relocate and rebuild? The Christchurch earthquakes caused extensive damage to our facility. Strengthening and repairs were undertaken to ensure the building could be safely used in the medium term. This enabled continuity of programme delivery and staff employment. However, parts of the facility, including two toilet blocks, a function room, kitchen and elevator remain unusable, the sponge pits leak and spectator numbers are limited. The land beneath the facility is highly vulnerable to future earthquakes. In early 2016, after consultation with city council and Sport Canterbury, CSG commissioned a comprehensive ‘business case and needs analysis’ to inform deci-

sions on the club’s future facility requirements and options. The results of the visitor solutions feasibility study determined that the best option for the club and community would be a rebuilt facility alongside the new Eastern Recreation and Sports Centre on QE II Park as repair of the current facility and remediation of the land would cost more than a rebuild. CSG is a valuable asset to Christchurch, it provides an additional indoor facility for recreational activities and assists city council and Sport Canterbury to provide accessible participation opportunities to the wider community. It delivers a wide variety of movement and gymnastics programmes to all age levels and various sports. These are vital to the health and well-being of the community. A rebuilt gymnastics stadium in the new QE II Park Sports Hub and Education precinct, will provide CSG an enhanced level of exposure, an opportunity to increase participation in gymnastics programmes and continuation of sharing its expertise with schools and other sports clubs and organisations.

MEDAL WINNERS: Term three champions, Chisnallwood Intermediate School at the Youthtown Super 10s day on September 22.

Chisnallwood takes home gold By Sophie Cornish CHISNALLWOOD Intermediate School pupils won the Youthtown Super 10s competition. The competition involved seven other schools and took place at Wilding Park. Every team had 10 players which played handball, floor-ball and indoor bowls. Sports that pupils wouldn’t normally play are chosen at the beginning of the term and taught from weeks one to eight. The pupils then come together at the end of the term and compete for their school to showcase what they have learnt. The Super 10s programme is designed for pupils who are not competing in organised competition during school time such as

Hagley Park afternoon sport. Teams are selected by the schools, however, pupils chosen are not necessarily elite or A team members, they are students that would not usually be chosen to represent and get an opportunity to win a medal. Youthtown is a nationwide not-for-profit organisation that encourages developing pupil’s physical ‘literacy’, confidence, competence, participation and engagement through sport, among other things. Other awards on the day included MVP of the tournament and the value shield. Winners are chosen by the pupils. Haeata Community Campus and Te Pa o Rakaihautu were also involved.

Rooted footpaths Paintball frenzy continues leave 168 trees set with attacks across city to be replaced community board liaise with residents about replacement trees and ask for feedback and reviews of the proposed tree replacement plan. The work will cost more than $100,000. The majority of the trees within the Westhaven area were planted in 1998, and half of those trees are now considered to be in poor condition. Cr Livingstone said more work needs to be done to avoid this issue in the future. “We need a joined up approach between the old tree policy ... developers and also our consenting processes when we put subdivisions in, because this is the outcome, this is what we’ve got, and it’s a real shame.” Continuing to fix the damage was not realistic, he said. “We could keep patching it up but if you keep doing that over the longer term it actually costs more than taking them out now.” No installations of root barriers is possible without causing damage to the tree roots.

Replacement of the 168 city council owned plane, elm, birch and liriodendron trees on berms outside properties in Westhaven has been reccomended in a report to the Coastal-Burwood Community Board. There are health and safety concerns about the tree roots, which are too big for the narrow berms and are causing damage to infrastructure such as footpaths, kerbs, vehicle crossings, driveways, walls, fences and letterboxes. City councillor Glenn Livingstone said public safety is an issue. “We need to deal with it, it’s become a health and safety issue for many residents, including one or two in wheelchairs, where they have fallen out. We can’t go on like that,” he said. The city council staff report also recommends that the

Reports of vehicles and a cyclist being hit by paintball pellets were also recorded in the Cashmere area and out towards Governors Bay. One female who is a prolific shoplifter, and another male who damaged the premises, said Mr Hughes. “If you don’t get it right, it won’t stick in court,” said Mr Hughes, who feels better now all the retailers are working together. Nikki Griffin, of Bin Inn, is pleased with how the programme is working. She is in the process of trespassing a woman. “There are always people who are going to do it, but it’s just about making sure we (mall retailers) work collectively together,” she said. Mrs Griffin urges other mall retailers to get involved to make the programme more effective. “The more stores that get on board the more impact it’s going to have,” she said. New Brighton Business and Landowners Association manager Paul Lonsdale set up a similar scheme in the central city in 2007 when he was involved with the Central City Business Association and claims it was successful. “Some 20 issues a week was reduced down to one issue a week,” he said.

The man was arrested on Alport Pl, Woolston, after failing to stop for police on Tuesday. He had earlier eluded officers in Wainoni. It was then spotted in Ferrymead and pursued by police to Woolston where the man was arrested. “He is now in custody and facing driving offences,” a police communications spokesman said.

News Making pizzas for homeless By Sophie Cornish HAEATA Community Campus students are making pizzas to feed the homeless. James Boardman and three of his classmates donated 24 pizzas, 24 hot dogs a fruit salad and water bottles to Christchurch City Mission on September 22. The project is part of an integrated cross-curricular programme at Haeata which involves volunteering and service. “Student projects are kind of what we’re driven by,” said Haeata principal Andy Kai Fong. The school aims to help students understand what interests them and encourages them to do a project on it. “Those student projects based around their interests lead to great things for other people and themselves,” Mr Kai Fong said. The project was designed from scratch by James, a year 8 student. He first created the menu then budgeted what he needed for the food. Next, James approached Mr Kai Fong about hosting a mufti day, which raised $290. The food was then made and delivered to City Mission by James and three of his

classmates, Kaltan Gardner, Nikita Elliot, and Kashmere Honetana. Mr Kai Fong is impressed with James’ efforts. “The connection of learning that he has is pretty real, creating menus, budgeting those menus, organisation, coming to me, negotiating what he wanted, liaising with the City Mission . . . we absolutely applaud that sort of work.” The project comes after a series of different volunteering

actions from the school across the city. Year 13 students at Haeata spent one day a week in term three working in the community with Volunteering Canterbury. Some jobs included serving up the community lunch at the Delta Community Trust, clearing sites for Gap Filler, folding and measuring up curtains at the Curtain Bank and clearing and cleaning shelves at the Bromley Community Centre.

NOT MANY people could eat seven burgers in 5min. But then not many people are Marce ‘The Tongan Tornado’ Taulango. The New Brighton Snap Fitness manager wolfed down the burgers in the name of charity, raising $1273 ($159 per burger) for Christchurch Bull Breed Rescue. It is the third time he has won the competition, which was held at the Lower 9th Diner, Lichfield St. In previous competitions, he ate six and eight burgers respectively. Mr Taulango is happy with how the event went. “I didn’t feel that great after, but it was a good laugh,” he said. Family and friends – including

nieces, nephews, helpers from the charity, clients and members of Snap Fitness – supported Mr Taulango at the event. Doing it for the charity was great motivation to win, he said. “When you have something to fight for, you don’t think you’re going to lose.” The event was not created for charity but, in 2015, Mr Taulango competed to raise money for Second Chance Dog Rescue and, in 2016, it was Cure Kids. Runner-up Simon ‘The Rhino’ Hardy devoured six burgers. Each competitor had 5min to eat as many burgers as possible. When asked if he will compete again next year, Mr Taulango was unsure. “If they ask me again to come back I’ll probably say yes and find another charity but I’m not sure, I’m undecided yet.”

Pupil in West Ham United’s sights ERIC IMACHI is surprisingly philosophical about his chances of being invited to trial for West Ham United in London. The Queenspark School pupil often plays for Christchurch United in Spreydon and at the Yaldhurst football centre. His parents are anxiously checking their emails each day to find out if he has been picked by the prestigious English football club. Eric, 10, recently completed an intensive trial camp at West Ham United’s international academy on the Gold Coast. He will soon find out if he is among the lucky few to visit the Premier League club. Eric was invited to the Gold Coast after a successful West Ham United talent identification camp earlier this year, which was run by the club’s academy coach, George Cowie, in association with Waimak United. About 350 talented footballers from Australia and New Zealand across 10 age groups were selected to attend the Gold Coast camp, hosted by former West Ham United academy director Paul Heffer. Of those players, only 18 will be asked to attend a full trial at West Ham United, home to All Whites captain Winston Reid. Eric was philosophical about his chances. “There were a lot of good players at the camp, but you never know.

ACTION: Eric Imachi (middle) at a Christchurch United training.

TALENT: Eric with the other West Ham United hopefuls at the Gold Coast camp.

Even if I don’t get picked, though, I learnt heaps at the camp and made some new friends,” he said. “But, if I happen to be picked, it would be amazing to go to the same club as Winston Reid,” he said. Christchurch United technical director Fernando Lambert said everyone at the club is proud of what Eric has already achieved at such a young age. “Eric has been with Christchurch United and before that the Christchurch Football Academy for quite a few years. And it shows in how mature he is as a player,” said Lambert, who added that Eric is very strong technically, big for his age and has a powerful shot.

BROUGHT TO YOU BY... KUMARA, ORANGE AND PISTACHIO CAKE Ingredients 1-2 Orange Kumara, medium size 1 cup Pistachio nuts, shelled 1¼ cups Sugar 4 Eggs 2 tsp Oranges, rind ¼ cup Flour 1 tsp Ground cardamom Orange drizzle

CARAMELISED ASPARAGUS AND BACON Ingredients 16 Asparagus spears 4 rashers Streaky bacon, smoked 2 Tbsp Olive oil 2 Tbsp Maple syrup 1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce 1 Tbsp Sesame seeds Directions Preheat the oven to 190 deg C. Line a large roasting pan with baking paper.

Place a wire rack on top. Snap the tough ends off the asparagus. Cut the stalks to measure about 15cm. If the bacon is thick, run the blunt edge of a heavy knife along the bacon to ‘stretch’ it. Take four spears of asparagus and wrap the bacon around the bunch. Place on the rack, bacon ends down. Repeat with the remaining asparagus and bacon. Combine the oil, syrup and sauce. Brush thoroughly over the asparagus and bacon. Bake for 15-20min, until the bacon is cooked.

½ cup Sugar ¾ cup Orange juice 1 Tbsp Orange marmalade Directions Peel kumara and cut into evensized pieces. Cook in boiling water for 15min or until tender. Drain well. Place saucepan back on the warm element for 2min to remove any excess moisture from kumara. Push kumara through a coarse sieve into a bowl. Chop pistachio nuts finely. Add to kumara with orange rind. HOME & HEATING

Choosing the right heat pump for your home

Whether it be a new build, or a retrofit, most homes include at least one heat pump, if not a whole heating solution. They can provide cheap, clean heat and are much more convenient than a log burner as you just need to press a button. But how do you decide what is best? Choosing the right sized heat pump is key to ensuring optimum comfort levels. Every situation varies and it is therefore important to get professional advice from heat pump experts. The range varies from wall mounted high walls, floor mounted systems, multi systems, ceiling cassettes, right through to ducted central heating systems allowing you to have a very discreet way of heating your whole home to a constant temperature throughout. Firstly, you must select a heat pump that is suitable for the size of the space you wish to heat. Usually a site visit is the best way to ascertain this. Not only is the size of the area taken into consideration but also, insulation, building orientation, windows and ceiling space. There are a wide range of heat pumps available with different heating outputs so it is important to select the correct size for your requirements that will handle the job but not be unnecessarily overpowered. Secondly, the location of your heat pump is also extremely important. The cheapest installation is a back to back where the outdoor unit is positioned directly behind the indoor unit however this is not necessarily always the best option. It is vital that the indoor unit is positioned in a place that will not be

constantly blowing on you. Also important, is the location of the outdoor unit. Most people do not want their outdoor unit sitting directly in their outdoor entertaining area or right outside their bedroom window. Choose a brand you can trust. Many brands have come and gone over the years but there are a number of manufacturers who provide reputable and reliable products. All brands vary in their energy efficiency, quietness of systems and price, so it depends on your application as to which will be most suitable. Major brands such as Panasonic, Fujitsu, Mitsubishi, Daikin, Toshiba and Hitachi are all reliable brands backed up by good technical after sales service. Ensure your heat pump is installed by an accredited installer. This will not only ensure correct installation of your heat pump, but also validate the manufacturers warranty. Other things to consider when choosing a heat pump are time clocks, ease of use of the remote controllers, air filtration and also wifi capabilities. Heating is a major investment in your home and it is vital to get the right advice. Enviro Master Ltd specialise in the supply, installation and servicing of all major brands of heat pumps. Our salesmen are engineers ensuring you get quality, unbiased advice as to which system will suit your application the best. Enviro Master Ltd offer a free, no obligation quote and will come to your home to see what is required. Visit our website at www.enviromaster.co.nz.

Miracle weight loss fruit An extract of a small pumpkin-like fruit called Garcinia Cambogia from India & Asia has shown itself to greatly assist weight management & overall health. In fact many have found it to increase fat loss by 2 to 3 times greater than normal. T.V. Dr. Oz has said it is the most effective & fastest working natural supplement to support weight loss. Even without exercise & diet changes many have found it beneficial, although even better & quicker results are often obtained with extra exercise & an improved diet. The extract of this amazing fruit is called Hydroxycitric Acid (HCA) or CitriMax. Research has shown HCA to help suppress the appetite, reduce cravings, feel fuller for longer, increase energy levels, help prevent fat from being made & stored in the body, increase lean muscle mass, increase serotonin levels in the brain that help control mood & sleep (great for emotional eaters), improve cholesterol levels that may help reduce the chances of strokes & cardiovascular disease, help prevent sugar spikes as well as other health benefits. It is considered a very safe supplement (although check first if you are on medication) as it has been used for centuries as a flavouring agent & digestive aid. To obtain reliable results it is important

to take a product that contains a standardized extract of 60% HCA & also take the recommended amount as used in the clinical research. Some supplements also contain ChromeMate, a well-researched form of niacin-bound chromium to help improve the results even more. We have an absolute blast when we’re away. It’s all about having fun”. “Most of my trips are run annually because they’re so popular, but I’m always adding new destinations - like “Sicily, South Italy & Vatican” + “Cuba”, as people ask for them.’’ Brenda checks out all accommodation before booking it, and ensures the party spends at least a few nights at each place. “That way you don’t feel like you’re living out of a suitcase.’’ Many clients now have made over 20 tours with us, one has completed a whopping 27 tours. “My clients tell me they keep coming back

HEALTH & BEAUTY

Get your legs looking sweet for summer! Though generally harmless, spider veins can cause some to want to cover their legs up, even in the heat. Treating spider veins is rarely a medical necessity, but for those who want treatment for cosmetic reasons, spider vein-free skin is just a zap away. No one knows why some people develop spider veins and others don’t, but genetics, the hormone estrogen and possibly the hormone progesterone are thought to play a role. Spider veins appear more frequently in women than in men, and are particularly common in pregnant women and those taking oral contraceptives or hormone-replacement therapy. Getting rid of spider veins is safe and easy. Sclerotherapy, the gold-standard treatment for larger spider veins, involves injecting a saline solution or detergent into the veins, causing them to clump together or clot and become less apparent. “Anybody who has veins they don’t like is a good candidate (for sclerotherapy) because it’s an incredibly safe, easy procedure,” says Dr. Heather Jefferies, of Koru Clinic in Cashmere. In some cases, several injections are required. The procedure feels like a tiny needle stick, and most people usually get through it with little difficulty. Dr Jefferies

particularly recommends treatment for people with a family history of problem veins who are showing signs relatively early - for example, those who have multiple patches of spider veins by their early 20s. There is a strong chance - up to 90 percent - of greatly improved appearance after sclerotherapy, and results last for two years on average. After that, genetics or whatever other factors caused the veins to appear in the first place tend to take over, and maintenance treatment may be required to keep the skin vein-free. Laser treatment can also eliminate spider veins, particularly the smaller veins that are too small for sclerotherapy. Dr Jefferies often uses a combination of sclerotherapy and lasers: sclerotherapy for the“Your largerface veinsisand a laser to get rid of the unique. finer veins.
